STAYING OUT OF DEBT 4

The Lord shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow.
Deuteronomy 28:12

If you have been following this series on how to stay out of debt, by now you must have started taking steps to clear your debts, discussed with your creditors, and believed God for a debt-free life in this challenging world.

In this concluding edition, I will focus on practical steps to free you from debt. Believe that God can meet your financial needs through His Word. Standing on God’s promises gives you strength and boldness to access His provision.

Step 1: Learn How to Lend to God

“He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.”
– Proverbs 19:17

God is not a debtor to any man. What He promises, He will do. He cleared all our debts through Christ, becoming poor so we might be rich (2 Corinthians 8:9). Understand how to operate in this promise.

When you help the poor, you lend to God, and He will repay you:
“Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble.”
– Psalm 41:1

Read Psalm 41:2-3 to discover more promises for those who lend to God. A financially poor person is someone you can bless out of your little. There will always be someone less fortunate than you—invest in them, and God will repay you through others.

Another way to lend to God is by giving your most precious possessions for His kingdom’s work. Though it may seem impossible, it is a faith venture guaranteed by heaven. Hannah lent her only son Samuel to God (1 Samuel 1:27-28), and God blessed her with three more sons and two daughters (1 Samuel 2:21). Many have testified to similar breakthroughs.

Step 2: Redefine Your Financial Priorities

Wisdom demands that you take your debt seriously. Redefining your financial obligations is not faithlessness but prudence. Do not pretend all is well when you are in debt—this only deepens the problem. Adjusting your spending habits reduces debt accumulation and creates room to repay what you owe.

Step 3: Sow an “Out of Debt” Seed

Merely clearing debts is not enough—you need surplus to avoid future borrowing. Take a prayerful step of faith by sowing a seed specifically for financial breakthrough. God can multiply it (Hebrews 11:17-19).

Step 4: Rebuke the Devourer

Devourers are forces that drain your wealth and push you into debt. This battle is spiritual and must be fought spiritually:

  1. Pay your tithes faithfully—the 10% of your income given to your church.
  2. Engage in spiritual warfare—rebuke the devourer in Jesus’ name, using your authority in Christ.

Step 5: Take Action

“The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way, a lion is in the streets.”
– Proverbs 26:13

Do not just pray and confess—take practical steps. Increase your income, reduce expenses, and trust God to bless your efforts. Someone is waiting to help you, but you must step out in faith.

Conclusion

As you follow these steps, your debts will be cleared. God will give you more than enough, making you a lender, not a borrower. Change your confession today: “I am no longer a debtor, in Jesus’ name!”
