THE PERSONALITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

TEXT: JOHN 16:7-15

Introduction

This month we shall concentrate on the personality of the Holy Spirit. This will help us to know how to relate with Him in our day to day activities. We cannot truly appreciate a person’s work until we understand who they are.

Who He is Not

To know who He is, we need to know who He is not.
(a) He is not a feeling
(b) He is not a fire
(c) He is not a dove
(d) He is not a noise
(e) He is not oil
(f) He is not a wind
(g) He is not a river or water.

The Holy Spirit is greater than any physical thing. We should not allow physical symbols to rob us of the supernatural personality of the Holy Spirit.

He is a Person

(a) He has a will – Act 11:12; Rev. 2:7; Act 20:28
(b) He has emotions. He is a person with feeling. He can love – Rom. 15:30; and can be grieved – Eph. 4:30.
(c) He has intellect: 1 Cor. 2:9-10; Rom. 8:26-27; John 14:26; John 16:12-15, only the person with an intellect has the ability to explore, examine, think and search.
(d) He can speak: Act 13:2; 2 Sam. 23:2; 1 Tim. 4:1. The Holy Spirit speaks directly and speak through His people. He longs to speak to you.
(e) He can be lied to – Lev. 19:10; Acts 5:1-5.
(f) He can be blasphemed – Matt. 12:31-32. Blasphemy against the Spirit brings “unpardonable” sin. This is when you willfully attribute to Satan the miracles performed by Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. It should be noted that blasphemy is a wilful act and not accidental.
(g) He could be resisted – Act 7:51; Zech. 7:11-13. This is done by unbelievers and religious people.

He Can be Quenched – 1 Thess. 5:19

Closing Question and Discussion

How do you relate to the Holy Spirit now that you know He is a person? Compare your relationship with your closest friend with your relationship with the Holy Spirit.

Conclusion

We all have our shortcomings just like Elijah (James 5:17), but we must learn to continue to the end without fear or distraction.

Memory Verse: “But the Comforter, who is the Holy Ghost, whom the father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatever I have said unto you.”
